GreenWire® - The road to a CO2-compensated baling wire

To create a product with the lowest possible carbon emissions, it is important to understand where emissions occur in the production chain. For us, this is the production and sale of wire to the pulp industry.

CO2 emissions along our supply chain

Two key questions:

  1. Why are we talking about CO2?
  2. Where are the main CO2 emissions along our supply chain?

Why are we talking about CO2?

Major companies, organisations and countries have set ambitious climate targets to reduce their CO2 emissions and fight climate change. For example:

  • CO2-neutral production by 2039 (most companies).
  • Climate neutrality in the supply chain by 2040.
  • Global net carbon neutrality by 2050.

Although we are a small company compared to these players, we want to contribute, which we do with our GreenWire product.

Main sources of CO2 emissions:

  1. Manufacture of the raw material (wire rod): Most of the emissions come from steel production.
  2. Transport: Also has a significant impact.

Our production: Minimal impact on CO2 emissions thanks to 100% renewable electricity.

Our supplier of wire rod (raw material)

We are working with ArcelorMittal, whose modern steel mill in Hamburg produces wire rod with lower CO2 emissions using Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology. This gives us:

  • A significantly lower emission level compared to traditional blast furnace methods.
  • An opportunity to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 77% with GreenWire products.

The impact of transport

We are actively working to reduce emissions at the transport stage:

  • Railways: 100% of the wire rod is transported by rail from Hamburg to our factory in Söråker.
  • Electric lorries: Used for delivery to certain customers.
  • Combined transport: Trailer by rail for long-distance deliveries, e.g. to southern Europe, and onwards by lorry to the end customer.

Several of our transport partners are working to make their transport more environmentally friendly through electric vehicles and natural gas.

GreenWire - A CO2-compensated baling wire

We offer two levels of wire rod:

  1. Standard rolling thread: Produced using EAF technology, which means over 1000 kg less CO2 emissions per tonne compared to traditional blast furnace production.
  2. GreenWire (Xcarb): Produced with 100% renewable energy and 70-80% recycled materials, further reducing emissions by 50%.

Comparison of CO2 emissions:

  • Traditional wire rod (blast furnace): 2000-2200 kg CO2/tonne.
  • GreenWire (Xcarb): 430-517 kg CO2/tonne.
